Living in a Bungalow: Why It Could Work For You

Living in a bungalow has been an obvious choice for a lot of people for over 150 years, because they are inexpensive to build, being a small single storey home. 

Bungalows became ever more popular after both world wars and were ideal for disabled people because of the accessibility for wheelchairs etc. It is usual to have a large plot of land with a bungalow and this enhances the feel of it being connected closely to the garden, especially as these days it is possible to have huge glass doors and windows bringing the garden into the living space. It is also easy to design a bungalow with lovely open living areas.

There is the added advantage of designing and building a lifetime home without the need to move because of age associated problems. Even though bungalows are regarded as homes for “old people” they are ideal for family living with no stairs for young children to fall down and generally, as mentioned, the large garden and living space for families.

Sadly, despite people living longer these days, there is a definite decline in building bungalows and it is common practice to demolish them for the land they are on to make way for larger houses or even blocks of houses or flats. It is a shame that bungalows are being overlooked by developers due to there being more monetary value to a plot if a two- or three-storey home can be built on it. A recent survey showed that only 1 in 50 new builds these days is a bungalow.  This is despite a national survey a decade ago showing that the “happiest” homes were single storey!

Hopefully, this decline will reverse in years to come with an increasingly ageing population pushing up demand for an easily accessible home.  Family life too would benefit from the priceless link of home to garden that a bungalow, or any single storey dwelling, offers.
